Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to DC Lofts. Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions. If you don't see the answer to your question, please submit your question.

What is your definition of a loft?   [top]
There are many different definitions of a loft. We use a broader definition since D.C. has very few old factories or warehouses. Most lofts in the area are either new constructions, converted old schools, and renovated old brownstones. Lofts should have tall ceilings and an open floor plan. Ideally it would have a combination of exposed ceilings and ductwork, concrete floors, and if two stories high, a mezzanine level overlooking the lower floor. Click here for a more detailed discussion.

Why isn't a particular property classified as a loft?   [top]
We get frequent questions on why a particular project is not classified as a loft. We use the definition above. If it is a loft or loft-like, we will be happy to add it to the loft directory. If a loft project is missing, please submit a request and we will research it.

How can I get my development listed?   [top]
Please submit the following information to get listed. In exchange, we would greatly appreciate if "DCLofts.com" is added as a source for leads to your registration page.

  • Building name and website
  • Address, city, state, and zip code
  • Neighborhood name, if applicable (e.g., Clarendon, Shirlington, Dupont, Logan Circle, etc.)
  • Developer and marketing/sales agent name plus contact phone number for interested buyers or renters
  • Number of units, types of units, number of buildings, number of floors, etc.
  • Features of units including any that are loft-like (e.g., concrete ceilings, exposed ductwork, mezzanine level overlooking a lower floor, height ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, barn doors, industrial finishes, and open floor plans). Having just granite countertops and stainless steel appliances does not necessarily qualify as a loft.
  • Delivery date

Why is some of the information outdated?   [top]
With several hundred developments, it's difficult to keep up with all the changes. We rely on developers, real estate agents, buyers, and others to provide up-to-date information. Please submit your update and it will be posted.

How can I update information about a development?   [top]
We welcome updates from developers, realtors, buyers, etc. Please submit your update and it will be posted.

Where do you get your information?   [top]
We gather information from a variety of sources and strive to use multiple sources, focusing on fact-based information rather than advertising and marketing copy. We obtain information from local government agencies, planning boards, architects, engineers, media publications, and buyers as well as developers, real estate marketing firms, and agents.

How can I find information about a specific unit for sale or rent?   [top]
Realtors, developers, and apartment landlords are the best source for specific units for sale or rent. We are not able to track the availability of specific units. We hope our directory helps speed up your search by consolidating the contact information and websites for upcoming loft projects and existing or planned apartment buildings with lofts.

What geographic areas do you cover?   [top]
We focus on the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore metropolitan areas. In the Northern Virginia area, this includes Arlington County, City of Alexandria, City of Falls Church, McLean, Fairfax County, and Fairfax City. In Maryland, this includes Silver Spring, Bethesda, and Gaithersburg in Montgomery County; Prince George's County; and counties around Baltimore.
